The Kansas Department of Corrections organized a steering committee in 2011 to establish a mentoring program for offenders being released from state correctional facilities. Reaching Out From Within (ROFW) was part of that steering committee. The program developed is known as Mentoring4Success.

Mentoring4Success features 12 “lead” organizations throughout Kansas, experienced service groups that take the lead in recruiting, screening, training, matching and supervising mentors. Guided by the KDOC, these organizations prepare mentors to work safely and effectively with offenders six to 12 months prior to release to reduce their risk of re-offending or returning to prison. We are one of those lead organizations.

 

With funding support from the Health Foundation of Greater Kansas City, ROFW was able to put in place a mentoring program for men and women who were incarcerated at Lansing and Topeka Correctional Facilities and were being released to Johnson, Leavenworth, and Wyandotte Counties.

 

The search for additional mentors continues because an estimated 4,700 people are released from prison each year in Kansas and at least half need help with housing, employment, family and other issues.
